The focus is the settlements, buildings and prominent people associated with the river and its surrounds. The journeys from source to sea, with some detours along tributaries, are real in that they deal with places visited by the author, but virtual because they are constructs assembled from separate visits, rather than actual journeys. The rivers were selected because they are well known to the author. Finally, it may be useful to emphasise that natural history and navigation of the rivers are not considered in any detail.
